Free Crochet Pattern: Scrap Basket
Let me guess, you googled “Free Crocheted Basket Pattern” and landed here. Hello! Thanks for being here…There is nothing special about my pattern except that it allows you to use whatever yarn you have on hand… no need to buy certain weights or brands of yarn to make it look wonderful!!
Let us start by talking about yarn size. This pattern can be modified for any weight of yarn and since you’ll use multiple strands it mostly depends on total thickness of the cumulative yarn you’re using. The blue basket above was made using 3 strands of worsted weight (size 4) yarn. But you absolutely can use DK or light weight yarn/sock yarn – the modification comes to the number of strands you use. If I were using DK weight, I would use up to six or eight strands just to make it “bulky”.
You can mix and match yarns too. For instance the multi-colored basket pictured below used yarns of all sizes. DK through Bulky!!! It truly was a “scrap basket” – Just substitute the number of strands needed to match the weight. For example: Going from six strands of Size 1 yarn to using three strands of Size 1 with one strand of Size 6 yarn. Make sense??
Remember this pattern is for the following blue basket. Make adjustments according to your needs. Let’s get going…
YOU WILL NEED:
3 skeins worsted weight yarn
H/5.00 mm Hook
Stitch Markers (4 is ideal)
Scissors
STITCHES:
CH – Chain
SC – Single Crochet
NOTES:
– This pattern is worked into a round until finished, so make sure to count or leave a stitch marker at the beginning of your rows. Also, double check that your bottom lies flat before starting on the sides. If it does not, your increases may be off.
– Continue increasing the bottom rows according to the stitch increases until you have your desired size. I usually go until the bottom is about 13” across.
– Sides heights can vary – I usually aim to have about 25 rows on the sides. Do more or less as you please.
